Giants Vs. Padres 9/15/2021

The Padres came into this game hoping to snap a 5 game losing streak. The Giants entered this game riding a 9 game win streak and on the verge of 10 straight. This game happened on Roberto Clemente Day. If the Giants won this game they would secure a series win but if the Padres won they would keep a series tie in reach. The Giants would attempt to win in honor of Roberto Clemente with Tommy La Stella (2B) hitting leadoff, Brandon Belt (1B) hitting 2nd, Buster Posey (C) hitting 3rd, LaMonte Wade Jr. (RF) hitting cleanup, Kris Bryant (LF) hitting 5th, Brandon Crawford (SS) hitting 6th, Evan Longoria (3B) hitting 7th, Steven Duggar (CF) hitting 8th, and last but not least, Dominic Leone (P) hitting 9th. The Padres had Jurickson Profar (RF) hitting leadoff, Fernando Tatis Jr. (SS) hitting 2nd, Manny Machado (3B) hitting 3rd, Eric Hosmer (1B) hitting cleanup, Tommy Pham (LF) hitting 5th, Adam Frazier (2B) hitting 6th, Austin Nola (C) hitting 7th, Trent Grisham (CF) hitting 8th, and Joe Musgrove (P) hitting 9th. The pitching matchup in this game was between Joe Musgrove who was 10-9 with a 2.93 ERA and the Giants bullpen. Dominic Leone would get the start in this game marking the 2nd time in 3 days he would be starting. Leone was 3-3 with a 1.41 ERA. For the Padres to win they needed to hit well off the Giants relievers, take an early lead, and find a nice start out of Joe Musgrove. For the Giants to win they needed to score first, find another nice game out of the relievers, and get Joe Musgrove out of the game early. Would the Giants win their 10th straight or would the Padres get the win on Roberto Clemente Day? To the game!

Leo’s Extra Inning: This was a very disappointing loss for the Giants as it snapped their 9 game win streak and the Dodgers gained a game on them in the standings cutting their lead down to 1.5 games. The Giants bullpen was not able to back up their offense with 7 pitchers pitching in this game and giving up a combined 16 hits, 6 earned runs, 3 unearned runs, 3 walks, and 1 home run. Dominic Leone had had 1 strikeout and got the loss and the rest of the team got no decision. Jarlín García, Jay Jackson, and Kervin Castro each recorded 0 strikeouts, Zack Littell and José Álvarez each struck out 1, and José Quintana struck out 2 batters. On the hitting side of things the Giants were led by Kris Bryant who went 1 for 2 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 2 walks, and a home run. Brandon Belt played well too going 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and a home run. Thairo Estrada chipped in as well with a pinch hit home run in his only at bat. The Padres didn’t pitch exceptionally either as Joe Musgrove gave up 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 2 homers in 6 innings. Musgrove also got 4 strikeouts and the win. The Padres bullpen wasn’t much better than the Giants’ as they had 3 pitchers pitching an inning each and giving up a combined 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and 2 home runs. Craig Stammen and Mark Melancon each struck out 0 batters and got no decision and Emilio Pagán struck out 1 and got a hold. Overall, this was a very disappointing loss for the Giants where the bullpen failed to do their job.
