Giants Vs. Brewers 8/31/2021

The Brewers entered this game coming off of a nice win over the Giants powered by great pitching. The Giants entered this game coming off of a stint where they lost 3 of their last 4 games. This game was game 2 of a 4 game series and if the Brewers won they would secure a series tie at worst but if the Giants won they would tie up the series. After being scratched from the game the night before, Johnny Cueto would get the start in this game in the City Connect jerseys that the Giants wear every Tuesday. The Giants hoped to finish August on a high note with LaMonte Wade Jr. (RF) hitting leadoff, Brandon Belt (1B) hitting 2nd, Buster Posey (C) hitting 3rd, Brandon Crawford (SS) hitting cleanup, Kris Bryant (3B) hitting 5th, Mike Yastrzemski (CF) hitting 6th, Wilmer Flores (2B) hitting 7th, Alex Dickerson (LF) hitting 8th, and last but definitely not least, Johnny Cueto (P) hitting 9th. The Brewers had Kolten Wong (2B) hitting leadoff, Willy Adames (SS) hitting 2nd, Christian Yelich (LF) hitting 3rd, Omar Narváez (C) hitting cleanup, Avisaíl García (RF) hitting 5th, Rowdy Tellez (1B) hitting 6th, Jace Peterson (3B) hitting 7th, Lorenzo Cain (CF) hitting 8th, and Brandon Woodruff (P) hitting last. The pitching matchup in this game was between Brandon Woodruff who was 8-7 with a 2.38 ERA and Johnny Cueto who was 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA. For the Brewers to win they needed to take an early lead, get Johnny Cueto out of the game early, and find a nice start out of Brandon Woodruff. For the Giants to win they needed to take long at bats against Brandon Woodruff, score early, and find a nice start out of Johnny Cueto. Would the Giants get out of their slump or would the Brewers take game 2? To the game!

Leo’s Extra Inning: This was another disappointing loss for the Giants where the Brewers hit well off of Johnny Cueto and got a bunch of very lucky hits as well. This was also the Giants 3rd straight loss for the Giants. The Dodgers won their game against the Braves which meant that the Giants lead over the Dodgers was just half a game. Johnny Cueto didn’t pitch terribly in this game as a bunch of the hits he gave up would be outs most of the time. Regardless, Cueto pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up 10 hits, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, and a home run. Cueto struck out 1 batter and got the loss. José Quintana pitched amazingly in his Giants debut going 3 1/3 innings and giving up just 1 hit, 0 runs, and a walk. Quintana also recorded 6 strikeouts and got no decision.
